Aquaculture in recent times has assumed importance as a source of affordable protein for masses with a significant potential for supplementing livelihood in a rural economy. Now its contribution to the economic growth and nutrition security is well recognized nationally and globally. The fish production in the country has witnessed eight-fold growth from the 0.82 million tones in the 1950s to over 6.4 million tones at present in which inland fisheries including aquaculture contribute 3.4 million metric tones.
